It also chronicles a revolution that took place in India after it opened up to entrepreneurs. Harish Mehta and I had small but crucial roles to play in this change. India is destined to be the number one economy in another 50 years as it was before the British Raj!”

Harish Mehta, highlighted, “I first met Kanwal Rekhi in 1993, and over the decades our conversations have always gone beyond companies; they’ve been about institutions, ideas, and the future of India. Kanwal was among the early Indian Americans who not only built successful technology businesses in Silicon Valley but also helped show an entire generation that entrepreneurship was a viable and meaningful path. Through TiE, he institutionalised mentorship and pay-it-forward thinking globally, while keeping India firmly at the centre. The Groundbreaker reflects that lifelong conviction, that real progress comes from bold thinking, trusted collaboration, and building ecosystems that outlast individuals.”

For Rekhi, entrepreneurship was more than a business venture; it was “the personal definition of independence.” He viewed the founding of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) as a “second independence movement” aimed specifically at achieving economic freedom. To Rekhi, founders were often “oddballs and lonely people,” and he envisioned TiE as the “temple” where they could finally find their community and purpose.

The “$8 Man” Who Shaped Silicon Valley

Kanwal Rekhi’s story is one of historical significance, starting with his 1967 arrival in the U.S. as a student with only $8 to his name. This modest start as part of the first wave of Indian immigrants set the stage for a career that would redefine global entrepreneurship. In his book, The Groundbreaker, Rekhi connects his personal history to broader geopolitical themes, exploring:The Digital Evolution:

What it meant to build the tech industry from its infancy versus navigating today’s uncertainty.

Democratic Values: Why a free society is the primary engine for entrepreneurial progress.

The Immigrant Experience: Navigating the challenges of the “brain drain” era to create global impact.

Often referred to by Fortune as the “Godfather of the Silicon Valley’s Indian Mafia,” Rekhi’s ascent placed him among tech titans like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Larry Ellison. His influence extended far beyond boardrooms, as he advised global heads of state on policies that reshaped the technological landscape.

Today, Rekhi is perhaps most celebrated for his legacy as a mentor, having sparked the careers of thousands of founders. His guidance helped cultivate a new generation of leaders, many of whom have since built empires and achieved billionaire status.

The creation of The Groundbreaker was a family-driven project, sparked by Rekhi’s son, Ben, who believed his father’s journey would resonate with a wide audience. To build the narrative, Rekhi pulled from a deep archive of his personal blogs, public speeches, and decades of news coverage.

To ensure the story was both professional and engaging, Rekhi collaborated with veteran American journalist and former People magazine publisher Todd Gold. The duo spent three years refining the manuscript, intentionally avoiding “chest-thumping self-glorification” to produce a “breezy” and accessible final version. The result is a focused evolution of Rekhi’s career—tracking his transformation from a technical engineer to a CEO, and finally, to a global mentor.
