Steps

Steps

There are steps I’ll take to be with you
To never be apart again
To hear your quiet sounds as the wind blows
Catch the faintest whiff of your perfume
I know you’re reaching out to me
Undoing the ropes of my restraint
Pulling spiderwebs so close to your grasp
A hundred arms waiting to join with mine
I recall your silky hair dipped in the morning dew
The flaxseed richness and the golden hue
The way you tied it and dyed it
I gave it chase like a greyhound at the track
I never felt your heartbeat
But I heard it in my soul
It was steady and never skipping
Timing itself like my very own
When I got beside you nothing else was there
Not the shadows or the demons
Nor the monsters in my world
A slate suddenly clear except for you and me
I could have danced the whole night long
Even written the lover’s song
Taken a bite of the forbidden apple
Or tried to fly with broken wings
I would have gathered shiny objects
And mementos of luck and joy
Stars and four leaf clovers
Piled high on an altar built by angels
While hummingbirds sweep around for your honey
I’d do the same thing too
As the bees and birds and florists
Standing nearer my love to thee
Through the chill of the night till the rising sun
I am there and not wont to go
Leaving chores unattended and piling up
I can’t turn away on a whim
But your whispers are heeded if not so badly needed
That I can’t stay encased in your hold
So I turn with my heart and a stick in my hands
And I once again feel my way home.
