ARCHITECTURE OF POLKADOT ECOSYSTEM

The Polkadot India Workshops Series, an initiative by Edgetributor SubDAO, was held at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in February, with the aim of enhancing the Polkadot ecosystem’s developer exposure in India and providing students and professionals with a strong foundation in Polkadot 2.0 and JAM (Join Accumulate Machine). The event was supported by DOT Events Bounty, and collaborated with various partners, including WnCC, Web3 Mumbai, and Pala Labs.

As part of the event, Polkadot hosted technical workshops that focused on various aspects of the blockchain and Polkadot ecosystem, such as Web3, blockchain fundamentals, DeFi, NFTs, and Polkadot’s architecture. The workshops brought together students, professionals, and industry experts to discuss and learn about the latest developments and trends in the Polkadot ecosystem and the broader blockchain space.

The Polkadot India Workshops Series served as an invaluable opportunity for attendees to gain hands-on experience, connect with fellow developers, and learn from experienced blockchain professionals. The event contributed to the growth and development of India’s blockchain community and further solidified Polkadot’s commitment to fostering innovation and education in the blockchain space.

JAM, or Join Accumulate Machine, is a groundbreaking protocol that amalgamates key features from both Polkadot and Ethereum. Essentially, it is an innovative universal machine designed to push the boundaries of blockchain technology. Drawing significant inspiration from Polkadot, JAM is fully compatible with the Polkadot ecosystem while aiming to enhance and simplify its core functionalities.

JAM’s primary objective is to replace the Polkadot relay chain, offering a more adaptable and open approach to blockchain development. By focusing on radical un-opinionated usage of cores, JAM provides developers with greater flexibility, facilitating the creation and deployment of a wide range of decentralized applications (dApps) and services.

Polkadot co-founder Gavin Wood presented explaining the Join-Accumulate Machine (JAM) at the IIT Bombay – Polkadot India Workshops Series, calling it “a proposal for the future of Polkadot.”In a “major revision,” the JAM protocol would replace Polkadot’s Relay Chain with a “more modular, minimalistic design,” resulting in a permissionless object ecosystem similar to Ethereum’s smart contracts.“

JAM will allow Polkadot to run generic “services”, smart contract logic which can process the result of execution on cores,” Polkadot founding organization the Web3 Foundation’s statement.

One of the key advantages of JAM is its compatibility with various virtual machines (VMs), including the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and others like WebAssembly (WASM). This enables developers to use their preferred programming languages and tools, lowering barriers to entry for blockchain development and promoting broader adoption of the technology.

As a protocol that seeks to redefine the foundations of blockchain architecture, JAM demonstrates the continuous evolution and innovation within the Polkadot ecosystem. By integrating the best aspects of existing blockchain platforms and introducing novel concepts, JAM represents an exciting step forward in the ongoing development of decentralized technology.

JAM will include a parachains service that can operate current parachains created on the Substrate blockchain framework, allowing developers to continue using Substrate to create and deploy their own blockchains. Other technological enhancements include the replacement of WebAssembly with the Polkadot Virtual Machine.

“JAM is permissionless in nature, allowing anyone to deploy code as a service on it for a fee commensurate with the resources this code utilizes and to induce execution of this code through the procurement and allocation of core-time, a metric of resilient and ubiquitous computation, somewhat similar to the purchasing of gas in Ethereum. We already envision a Polkadot-compatible CoreChains service.”At the center of this idea is JAM, a new version of the Polkadot chain that will extend Polkadot’s capabilities beyond the existing Web3 restrictions while allowing a wide range of technologies to be deployed on Polkadot. With JAM, revolutionary scalability, previously only seen in rollups, is extended to the consensus layer.

Project Liberty, a social-media disruptor, aims to revolutionize the digital landscape by leveraging Polkadot’s blockchain technology and parachain ecosystem. Polkadot’s parallel-but-connected blockchains, known as parachains, have become an increasingly popular choice for various projects due to their scalability, interoperability, and security features.

To secure a coveted parachain slot, projects are required to participate in special auctions, with support from user communities playing a critical role in the selection process. Within Polkadot’s parachain ecosystem, there is a specific category designed for projects that serve the common good, and Project Liberty may eventually fall under this classification.

Peter Mauric, head of public affairs at Parity Technologies, mentioned that Project Liberty would likely start as a standard parachain, but there is a possibility for it to be voted in as a common-good chain by the community in the future. This would signify the project’s importance and potential to contribute significantly to the entire Polkadot ecosystem and the broader Web 3.0 landscape.

In addition to its focus on parachains, Project Liberty is planning to launch a token to manage stable bandwidth resources for messaging and social media. The token is expected to play a vital role in ensuring scalability and managing resources within the decentralized social media environment. Braxton Woodham, the author of the Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP), has highlighted the potential of Polkadot’s unique design to support large-scale deployment of the protocol. Polkadot’s focus on interoperability, scalability, and security makes it an ideal platform for projects like DSNP, which aim to revolutionize the existing social networking landscape.

Polkadot’s economic model revolves around its native token, DOT, which serves multiple functions within the ecosystem, including governance, staking, and adding new parachains. This versatile economic structure enables projects to access the resources and incentives necessary for growth and sustainability while fostering a collaborative environment for developers, users, and investors.

Polkadot’s architecture is designed with Web3 principles in mind, offering a novel approach to tackle scalability challenges while maintaining decentralization. The network’s core component, the relay chain, plays a crucial role in ensuring shared security and communication among the connected parachains. These parachains, or specialized blockchains, are optimized for particular tasks and enable the network to scale horizontally by adding new parachains without straining the main network.

This design significantly improves interoperability, allowing parachains to exchange information and assets effortlessly while preserving resilience and generality. Polkadot uses the ELVES protocol for shared security, particularly for checking data and messages passed between parachains, while also exploring ZK-rollups for specific use cases. ELVES offers a cheaper and faster alternative to ZK-rollups for certain tasks. Polkadot also utilizes bridges, like Hyperbridge, for interoperability with chains outside its shared security domain.

Polkadot Rollups are an essential component of the Polkadot ecosystem, serving a similar function to optimistic rollups in Ethereum. Both Polkadot Rollups and optimistic rollups utilize an interactive method with a fraud-proof mechanism to enhance the network’s efficiency and scalability.

While optimistic rollups and zk rollups are secured by Ethereum, Polkadot Rollups are secured by the Polkadot relay chain, leveraging its robust security and reliability. By implementing the checking and fraud-proof mechanics natively in Polkadot, these rollups provide seamless integration and compatibility with the broader ecosystem.
