To commemorate this milestone, Art & Soul hosted a series of events, including the launch of Ajay De’s 2025 Almanac and an artist film screening. Ajay De’s artistic journey took an unconventional path when he decided to forego color and embrace charcoal as his primary medium to convey his experiences. Drawing from the deep well of childhood memories that left a lasting impact on his life, De’s artwork is a testament to the power of personal experiences in shaping one’s creative expression.

As an introverted individual, De often struggled to express his thoughts and feelings verbally. It was through the act of putting pencil to paper that he discovered his true voice, finding solace and joy in the process of creating art. The transformative power of art allowed him to turn his life experiences into a rich source of inspiration.

“I channelled my energies into artistic expressions and learnt the right way to stroke the paper with my fingers and thumb, and even my palm, while sketching with a charcoal pencil. I believed there was more truth to black and white and that, colour, although appealing, did not pose a challenge. So black and white tones did not deter me, and I was not afraid to swim against the tide. I honed my skills at art colleges, drawing inspiration from my childhood memories, which had left an indelible mark,” says De.

Following his post-graduate studies at the J.J. School of Arts in Mumbai, Ajay De became increasingly fascinated by the black and white tones of charcoal. Japanese calligraphy, in particular, captured his interest, leading him to explore the possibilities and depths of this unique medium. Through his distinctive artistic approach, De continues to push boundaries and captivate audiences with his evocative charcoal creations.

De comments: “Life has left its impressions, and these are portrayed in my drawings. I am still learning and will continue to do so. For this, I am thankful to all those who have helped me, either knowingly or unknowingly, in making me what I am today. My colours emanate from nature. There is a lot one can learn from it. It is sad that, today, man no longer finds time to stand and stare anymore.”
