CHANEL LOVE FOR HOLLYWOOD

The Resort 2024 show of Chanel was held at the renowned Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, demonstrating the brand’s enduring association with Hollywood. An expansive movie screen dominated the set, with double C’s everywhere, the runway resembling a basketball court that was later transformed into an after-party roller rink. Models walked down the runway, with the film backdrop featuring the iconic Los Angeles skyline and beach.

The collection featured a more feminine and youthful style from Viard, who has been the artistic director of the house since 2019. However, the sporty elements of the collection, such as leg warmers, wedge like sneakers, running shorts and swim tanks, as well as skateboard accessories, were something new. It can be thought of as a Chanel-style look for a star’s every event, including, in an unexpected turn of events, Margot Robbie’s upcoming press tour for her upcoming film, Barbie, which is expected to be the summer’s top-grossing film.

“The idea is to offer a breath of fresh air, a voyage, a light-hearted and happy fantasy. Between a tribute to the glamour of great film stars and evoking the world of fun to be had with aerobics, sports and roller skating, between the dream on one hand and what you want to wear on the other, it’s all a question of balance,” said Creative Director Virginie Viard per the show notes.

While the collection pays tribute to the city of film, Viard didn’t forget to incorporate the classic Chanel codes that are so much a part of the brand. There were tweed suits, sequin embellishments, and all the classic feminine silhouettes. It was a collection that spoke to all the different types of Hollywood women we’ve seen over the years. Whether it was a business woman in a tweed suit in the ’60s, a fitness instructor in a ’80s bodysuit and leg warmers, or a ’14 party girl in a sequin mini dress, it was all creative and celebrity.

The French luxury house billed its Cruise 2023/2024 show as “an ode to the City of Angels,” in tandem with the opening of a massive new boutique on North Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, impressive four-floor, 30,000-square-foot boutique is now the brand’s largest store in the U.S.

Nearly one hundred years ago, in March 1931, Gabrielle Chanel made the first visit to California, and her resort collection was dedicated to her association with Hollywood. She designed clothing for films directed by directors such as Georges Cukor or Jean Renoir. The task in 1931 was of designing clothing, both on and off-screen, for the female celebrities of the studio, including Ina Claire and Gloria Swanson, and Chanel’s fee was a million dollars.

New York Times remarked, “Providing those pictures with an authority and distinction in fashion and style that the screen has never laid claim to before.”

Stars including Kristen Stewart, Marion Cotillard, and Margot Robbie, who are Chanel ambassadors, in addition to Sofia Coppola, Issa Rae, Tracee Ellis Ross, Sofia Richie, Rashida Jones, Paris Hilton, Camila Morrone, Kris Jenner, Rose Byrne, Lil Nas X, Riley Keough, enthralled the front row and a slew of others.

What dazzled the guests was the post-show performance by famous rapper, Snoop Dogg, “Ya’ll having a good time tonight?” he asked the crowd. “We’re going to turn this party up just a little bit the Chanel way. Shout out to my family in the house tonight. I’ve got my beautiful wife, my son, my daughter, my granddaughter, my father, some beautiful people in the house tonight.  Marion Cotillard rapped along with Snoop to songs like “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang” sipping Champagne. As he brought the hood to the fashion show because this is how we do it in the hood, we do it just like this …” and launched into his hit “The Next Episode.”, later surprised the crowd by bringing Anderson Paak onto the stage to perform “Smokin Out the Window.”
