Dobaraa, a vibrant gastropub and restaurant in Mumbai, recently paid homage to the city’s rich history by hosting “Patvad & Pours,” a unique Pathare Prabhu pop-up menu crafted by Chef Soumitra Velkar. The event, held at Phoenix Palladium, offered an exclusive opportunity for food enthusiasts to savor the authentic and lesser-known flavors of one of Mumbai’s oldest communities, the Pathare Prabhus.

“Every dish on this menu carries a piece of my childhood. These recipes have been treasured for generations, and it’s a privilege to bring them out of our homes and onto the table at Dobaraa for a wider audience to experience,” says Chef Soumitra Velkar.

Chef Soumitra Velkar’s carefully curated menu transported diners to the heart of Pathare Prabhu family kitchens, showcasing traditional dishes that have been passed down through generations. The pop-up menu allowed guests to experience the unique blend of flavors and ingredients that are intrinsic to Pathare Prabhu cuisine, a culinary heritage that is deeply rooted in Mumbai’s history.

Pathare Prabhu cuisine is a unique culinary tradition with influences from Gujarat, Rajasthan, and other regions, creating a delightful blend of bold flavors and distinctive recipes. This cuisine boasts a diverse range of dishes, from hearty rice and vegetable preparations to delectable mutton curries and seafood specialties. What sets Pathare Prabhu cuisine apart is its use of coconut milk and spices, offering dishes that are rich yet light and distinct from traditional Marathi fare.

Some signature elements of Pathare Prabhu cuisine include the incorporation of minced prawn or mutton in various traditional Marathi dishes, such as Upma, Alu wadi, and even Karanji, which traditionally has a sweet filling but is adapted with a meat-based filling in this cuisine. Additionally, Pathare Prabhus have put their unique twist on Gujarati Undhiyo by adding shrimp, Ghol fish, and even dried fish like dried prawns or dried bombil, creating a dish known as PP Ghada.

Patvad, also known as Patwadi, is a classic dish from the Pathare Prabhu cuisine that evokes a sense of nostalgia with every bite. This Maharashtrian delicacy consists of two main components: Patwadi, which is a spiced gram flour (besan) fudge, and Rassa, a tangy and spicy curry.

The Patwadi is made by steaming and tempering the gram flour mixture, then cutting it into small pieces once cooled. These flavorful pieces can be enjoyed as a snack on their own or added to the Rassa just before serving, creating a unique and satisfying dish.
